The Week in Review: Great Reads Across the Web
I’m an information junkie. I need my daily fix. Whether time gets the better of me and it’s one blog out of my RSS feed or an afternoon spent catching up on everything I’ve missed, I’m a voracious reader and I dig it. It lets me pass on the good, the bad, the funny and most importantly, share things of relevance with our customers and my growing network in the social media spaces (we’re currently on Twitter and Facebook and you can always connect with me on LinkedIn via “John Cushman”).
Here’s a list of my best on the web for the week. Some of the news isn’t “new,” but maybe it’ll be new to you:
Microsoft CIO Tony Scott predicts big changes ahead for CIO role – I found this today via @JoannMoretti on Twitter. Glad I clicked. It’s a great read that shows not only the internal struggles of any organization but focuses on the quandary: how do we scale to grow while being asked to cut-back?
Saving the Planet While Generating Profit – An interview with David Steiner, CEO of Waste Management, Inc. It’s an intriguing read as it discusses how Steiner’s helping a waste company dependent on landfills shift to a business model focused on eliminating landfills and driving sustainability. And hey – we’re not in the trash business but we all pay for it. A reminder of how our business affects other businesses we touch, need and engage with.
Electronic medical orders may save lives – Being in the EMR business ourselves, this was an inspiring read in the midst of a busy week. A recent report showed that a California medical system experienced a 20% drop in infant mortality following adoption of an electronic system. No matter what industry you’re in, the article demonstrates that efficiency and timeliness are key business strategies, not byproducts.
Pigeon: Impossible – This has nothing to do with anything except some good clean fun. Completely suitable for work – grab a colleague, pull up a chair and share a laugh or two.
